Free things to do in Jaco Costa Rica

Miros Mountain

The first on my list is Miro’s Mountain. This medium-level 2.7km hike takes you through the jungle, where you might find some monkeys in the trees (or feel the sticks they throw at you!). About halfway up, you will be able to stop for a bit of rest at the first vantage point, where you will have beautiful views of Jaco. Maybe bring some snacks if you have kiddos with you, take some pics, have a water break, and continue to the main lookout. Once you get to the top, you will veer off to the left, where you will see the remnants of a building. Follow that walkway to the end, where you will come to a lookout that gives you views of all of Jaco, including the beautiful beach with its postcard-ready blue water.

This mountain trek is a favorite for locals looking to get some exercise or walk the dogs (or the kids), and it’s also quite shady, in a good way so that you will get a break from the sun.

All in all, it’s about a 45-minute hike, depending on your speed and ability. You can do it in sandals, but sneakers are a better choice for the trek. The entrance is straightforward as it is just off the highway on the south end of Jaco, across from the gas station. There is parking available for a “donation,” so bring some coins if you are driving there. Don’t forget to bring water!

Jaco Beach

Obviously, the second on my list is a sunset walk on Jaco beach. You can start your walk from anywhere on the beach, and there are multiple entrances throughout town. Personally, I like to start at the south end and walk towards Claritas Bar at the north end. You will want to be on the beach from 5-6 pm to see the sunset. Have your camera ready because it goes down very quickly, and you won’t want to miss it.

Crocodile Bridge

Hey, have you heard about that crazy bridge in Costa Rica where you can see tons of crocodiles? Why not do that? Tarcoles Bridge is my number three. This bridge is located in Tarcoles, about 25 mins drive from Jaco. You can park your vehicle on either side of the bridge and walk across to the middle, where you will see these prehistoric creatures in all their muddy, swampy glory. There are a few shops where you can get some snacks, souvenirs or even sit down for ice cream. Be careful when taking pictures; you won’t get it back if you drop your camera!

Surf

One activity that I love doing, and that Jaco is known for, is surfing. It isn’t free unless you bring your board down with you, but the cost of a rental board is quite affordable. Jaco beach is quite welcoming to beginners, and if you are looking for some bigger, stronger waves, Playa Hermosa is just around the corner and world-famous for its waves.

Things to do in Jaco

People in Jaco love to be outdoors and are pretty active. Since we are a beach town, surfing is definitely one of the main activities here, but if that’s not your jam, that’s OK! There are lots to do here, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to enjoy it.

Travel safe, stay healthy, and Pura Vida!
